LA TRADICION DE LA GUIRNALDA EN LA PUERTA EN VÍSPERA DE NAVIDAD

Además del verde con que adornamos el interior de las casas, en la actualidad mucha gente también cuelga una guirnalda en la parte exterior de su puerta principal, y la mantiene en exhibición los doce días que dura la Navidad. Con anterioridad esta costumbre era más popular en América del Norte, pero ahora se está difundiendo en Gran Bretaña y el resto del mundo, tal vez por influencia del cine norteamericano.

Como costumbre invernal el uso de guirnaldas se origina en la antigua Roma, donde el intercambio de regalos formaba parte de las celebraciones del Año Nuevo, que acontecía entre el 31 de diciembre y el 4 de enero. La gama de regalos era amplia, pero originalmente consistía en ramas de siempreverde llamadas strenae en homenaje a Strenia, diosa de la Salud. Hoy en día con frecuencia decimos "A tu salud" cuando compartimos tragos navideños con nuestros amigos, y para los romanos el obsequiar ramas de siempreverde involucraba un deseo similar. Para hacerlas más atractivas era costumbre dar a estas ramas la forma de un anillo o guirnalda, y para demostrar que habían recibido tal regalo, y también para asegurar que la salud reinase en su hogar el año que comenzaba, los romanos exhibían estas guirnaldas en las puertas de sus casas.

Hoy día se tiende a comprar la guirnalda que adornará la puerta, pero en honor a la verdad, si fuésemos a seguir con fidelidad la tradición romana, sólo deberíamos exhibir una guirnalda recibida a título de presente de manos de otra persona.
